What We Can Learn About Leadership from the Chilean Miners

Some days it seems like you have to look long and hard to find examples of inspirational leadership lessons in the news. Today is not one of those days. If you haven’t already done so, you must read the front page article by Alexei Barrionuevo in the New York Times on how the 33 Chilean miners trapped in the copper mine organized themselves to survive. In an era where lots of people claim to be leaders but don’t deliver, here is a whole group of leaders doing what needs to be done to facilitate their own rescue.

You’ve probably heard the story by now, but, in case you haven’t, here’s the quick recap. The miners were trapped in a collapse a few montsh ago. They were presumed dead for 17 days until rescue crews on the surface pulled back a drilling tube to find a plastic bag with a note in it that said, “We are fine in the refuge, the 33.”  Since then, rescuers have been able to send necessities and communicate with the miners through a very small shaft running into the half mile deep space. The miners know that it will be between two and four months before they can be dug out.

What they’ve done for themselves since the collapse has been both simple and astounding.  Simple because it makes so much sense.  Astounding because of the grace and discipline they’ve shown under pressure. Through multiple acts of leadership they have organized themselves to take care of their bodies, minds and spirits. The way they’ve done it is instructive and humbling for all of us leading in much less challenging situations.

Here’s some of what we can learn from the miners:

Leaders share the role:  You might assume that the miners’ shift supervisor would take over the sole leadership role. Yes, Luis Urzua organized work assignments for the crew, assisted with the plan to get out of the mine and ensured that no one eat a meal until everyone’s food had been sent down the shaft. He did not, however, take on every leadership responsibility for himself.  The oldest miner on the crew, Mario Gomez, took the leadership role of attending to the spiritual and mental health of the men. He consulted with psychologists on the surface to monitor the psychic health of his comrades.  Yonny Barrios took the lead on ensuring the physical health of the crew by drawing on six months of nursing training he took 15 years ago. Barrios administered tests and health screenings to his friends on behalf of the doctors monitoring the situation above ground. What a beautiful and impressive example these men are of leaders who share the work of leadership.

Leaders leverage their gifts:  Each of these three miners along with others on the crew were drawing on the gifts of their life experience and interests to ensure the well-being of the unit. Someone I respect recently pointed out to me that you know you’re in the right leadership role when your heart and body and not just your head tell you it’s the right way for you to contribute. That’s more likely to happen when you’re leveraging your gifts. My guess is that Urzua, Gomez and Barrios felt that kind of alignment with the leadership roles they assumed.

Leaders keep the whole person in mind:  Every organization has a bottom line. In the case of a mine rescue, the bottom line is getting the miners out alive. It’s one thing, though, to bring the men out in relatively good physical health. It’s another to bring them out with their mental, spiritual and emotional health intact. How fortunate they are to be led by men who recognize those needs and have organized everyone to consistently attend to them. What difference would it make to the health of our organizations and the people in them if every leader approached their work with such attention and care to the whole person? It’s pretty breathtaking to consider, isn’t it?

One of the simplest definitions of Leadership, as defined by John Maxwell, is influence or the ability to get followers.

How to set SMART GOALS to join the 1% Success Club

Rajesh TedlaSMART GOALS build capabilities and capacities for organizations. They also provide individuals with direction and motivation for personal and professional success.

Research and history indicates that less than 1% of people are successful. One of the critical steps and the key differentiators among these 1% successful people has been, establishing clear and measurable personal and professional goals linked to their vision. The 1% successful population also ensures that these measureable goals are documented and reviewed on a regular basis (daily, weekly, monthly etc.).

Here are few pointers to assist you in your journey towards joining the 1% success club.

Step 1: Clarify your vision and write it down.  Make sure your review it on a daily basis until you completely internalize it.

Step 2: Establishing SMART GOALS.

Focus on 4 main domains of life:

  • Home/Family,
  • Work/Career,
  • Self: Mind, Body & Spirit, and
  • Community/Society

Take some quality time to think and reflect on your future aspiration, past and present successes and development needs (use assessments like success insights and 360 degree feedback to identify development needs) and incorporate them while developing your future SMART GOALS.

Step 3: Create detailed action steps along with start and finish dates for each goal. This is a very important step and most neglected one as well.  The tendency by most is not to include all the action steps to attain goals nor identify the start and finish dates as it forces them to think and take action.

Take some quality time and think through this process. These specific actions steps and dates provide daily focus and direction to attaining your goals.

Step 4: List the potential obstacles/barriers – what might stand in your way or prevent progress.

Step 5: Create a support list to overcome the identified obstacles/barriers:  what additional resources, people, and tools do you have or need to attain your goals. There may be some goals which are beyond your control hence very critical to be aware of them and monitor them continuously and seek help as needed

Step 6: Set Timelines to keep yourself on track. Decide on a very clear timeline to attain each goal. Set specific dates and frequency to review your timelines so that appropriate action steps can be taken to attain each goal on time.

Step 7: Measure Progress.  The final step is to create a tracking method (like a dash board of car) for completion of action steps and attainment of goals. Most people feel accountable and are inclined to adhere to deadlines when they know there is a mechanism in place for measuring success. Try to review your goals and actions dashboard weekly or monthly basis to ensure that all your goals are achieved on time and also to keep you motivated.

Goal planning is hard work, fact is 95% of all US workers do not have written goals and less than 1% have written action steps to attain goals.

Guess who consistently achieves goals? The 1% club members are the ones who always reach their goals. They do because they consistently have documented goals, actions steps and monitoring/tracking methods for their goals.

Take action today and take the extra time today to join the exclusive club of 1% successful people by setting your SMART GOALS.

Here are some tips for setting up SMART GOALS:

S: Specific and Measurable? “A goal should answer the quest and how will I know when I get there?” A SMART goal has no room for misunderstanding. It is not generic. If it cannot be measured, it cannot be managed or achieved

M: Motivating? It should be emotionally compelling? The goal should answer the question “WHAT and WHY?” If a goal does not contribute to either your personal or business success, it will be de-motivating and useless.

A: Attainable? A SMART goal is where you have to stretch to reach it. Easy goals does not challenge you, creates low self-esteem and become meaningless. Too difficult a goal can result in too much stress and becomes de-motivating and can easily give up hope.  Always evaluate situation and set yourself up for success.

R: Relevant? 20% of activities contribute to 80% of results. Is spending time on these activities relevant to your objectives?

T: Time-Bound and Measurable? A SMART goal can be broken into measurable segments (if it cannot, then it is an activity) that enables progress and evaluate the quality of your efforts. Also, helps prevent procrastination due to measurements

G: Guide Provides direction. Having a clear direction assists with prioritization and reduces conflicting priorities

O: Objectify Helps reduce the confusion and subjective. It also sometimes helps clarify contradictory expectations.

A: Assert Clarify your intentions. Without goals you are more likely to spend time on non-priority items

L: Link Link you to the organization’s mission. Goals connect individuals’ contributions and the organization’s vision.

S: Spur Spur you into action. They provide the impetus for you and the organization

Here are 4 steps that will assist you in effective decision making:

Think: Be precise, always think clearly about your request. Take time to prepare, write and rewrite your question to ensure using of the right words for maximizing impact, remember that words are powerful, so choose them carefully. If you need help, find people who are great at asking questions and learn from them.

Ask: Good focused questions, find out everything you need to know to make an intelligent, informed decision. Ask other members who have specific knowledge, do research, gather data, get sufficient information from a variety of sources to get ready for the next step “decide.”

Decide: Visualize the positive and negative consequences of not making a decision. Use all information obtained by asking to make a decision. Remember that making the decision is half the battle. If you are not careful you will get stuck and may have to face lots of consequences.

Act: Now that you have done some reflective thinking, ask around for more information and finally make a decision. It is fine to act (take action). Kick start yourself into focused action. Just start by taking small baby steps and gradually you will gain momentum. Remember, big reward in life only materialize when you start doing. Little habits and small positive changes are often the catalyst to get you started on your success path.

There are no shortcuts to building a life of success, it is an ongoing process. It takes time, real effort and desire to become more then you already are. All the strategies shared will work when understood and followed sincerely. They can dramatically change your life for the better if you choose to use them.

Make a decision now to refocus and become the best you can be, one day at a time.

10 Steps to Success

Here are 10 steps that will help you get started to navigate through these turbulent times.

1)     HOW YOU THINK, IS EVERYTHING – Always think positive and expect only the best. “What you think is what you get.”

Internal monologue (mental chatter) is the highest form of communication we have with ourselves on a daily basis.  Pay attention to what you are communicating with yourself; Positive or Negative?  If you are communicating and thinking about positive outcomes and positive actions then they will manifest in your real life. On the other hand, if you are mostly communicating negative outcomes and negative results then you will see negative results or outcomes. This one habit alone practiced and implemented can have a profound effect on your personal and professional life.

2)     DECIDE UPON YOUR TRUE DREAMS AND GOALSMake sure to write them down and review them daily, weekly and as often as possible to help you focus.

3)     TAKE ACTIONStart an activity today that will get you closer to your goal. Nothing happens without action

4)     NEVER STOP LEARNINGAttend classes, take training, read books and network with people. Start applying what you have learnt immediately.

5)     BE PERSISTENT AND WORK HARDSuccess is a long journey, never give up. Focus on your passion, talents, strengths, goals and keep working smart.

6)     LEARN TO ANALYZE DETAILSLearn to gather details and information from every experience. Learn from your successes and mistakes and use them effectively.

7)     FOCUS ON YOUR TIME AND MONEYPrioritization of time and money are critical next steps to success. Don’t let other people or things distract you from your passion and goals.

8)     DON’T BE AFRAID TO INNOVATETry to be unique and different in your own positive way. Following the herd (crowd) is a sure way to mediocrity.

9)     LEARN TO EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATEWorking with people is the key to your success, hence learn to understand, work and motivate others. Learn to be an effective communicator (oral or written). Ask the right questions to learn, understand and grow.

10)BE HONEST AND DEPENDABLE; TAKE RESPONSIBILITYTake charge of your life, take initiative and do not wait for someone to come and help you. Always follow through on your promises small or big. Be honest and trust worthy otherwise numbers 1-9 won’t matter.

Which Comes First, Attitude or performance?

The topic “Attitude or Performance” is a critical one for everyone to think and explore. I am presenting a great article written by Mr. Bill J. Bonnstetter, Chairman Target Training International

The correct attitude is everything and is directly connected to performance. So what comes first – attitude or performance? This is not a trick question; however, more information is required to totally understand the connection.

Most people’s attitude is formed based on how they value people and things. Our biases are also influenced by how we value people and things. For example, if you value higher education, you probably will have a positive attitude toward knowledge and people with expertise on subjects you find particularly interesting. On the flip side, you could be guilty of having a bad attitude when forced to listen to someone who hates higher education and has limited knowledge of the topic they are discussing.

Discovering the way you value people and things is critical to your happiness as well as to your success. So each of us needs to ask the tough question, “How do I really feel about the following?”:

  • Continuously learning new things
  • Accumulating material things
  • Making the world a prettier place to live
  • Helping others
  • Controlling others
  • Following traditions that have stood the test of time

If you value all six topics equally, you are seeking to discover your real purpose in life. You are in a search mode. Try this: For many people, it is easiest to eliminate one or two of the areas. Just ask yourself how you would feel if you had to spend eight hours a day for the next five days doing any of the six activities identified. If you have negative feelings about any of these six areas, cross them out because you will not discover your purpose in life where you have negative feelings.

Now select the areas where you have positive feelings. If you have identified more than one area with positive feelings, you need to ask yourself questions to identify the area you feel most positive about. Once you have identified the activity you like the best, ask yourself this question: “Is my current job satisfying this passion?” If not, you need to start looking for jobs and/or careers that will satisfy your passion. Once you find the correct job and/or career, you will truly understand “attitude is everything.”

Once you start valuing one or two of the six topics more than the other four, your view of people and things is starting to formulate a possible passion for them. This passion must be satisfied either on or off the job. If this passion is satisfied on the job, you probably will have a positive attitude toward your work, and this relationship usually leads to superior performance.
